CALVARY IN BARDEJOV
When staying in vicinity of Bardejov, one should not omit to follow the footsteps of coexistence of different nationalities and confessions. Calvary in Bardejov creates a beautifu scenary on the hill easterly from the town. The St. Cross Church has been built in an eclectic historicist style with expressive drawing of the facade. The whole complex is complemented by 13 years chapels, symbolizing each stop of the Calvary. Churches and religious buildings in Bardejov witness the architectural styles of several centuries, and they tabernacle different confessions.
The Church of St. Cross at the Calvary complex was built in the years 1863-1869 thanks to the then parish priest Eduard Kacvinský from Bardejov, who is buried there. The church has one nave. Main altar contains a painting The Descent From the Cross, painted in 1868. The complex also includes a cemetery in which important personalities from Bardejov are burried, such as the mayor Gejza Žebrácky, the Hungarian cartographer Jozef Homolka, natural scientist Kornel Chyzer and many others.
